Plan Ahead for Safety

If you’re caring for someone who is bedridden, or wheelchair bound, take a moment to think about the layout of your house. This is especially important  if you live in an area where tornadoes or strong sudden storms are quite common.  Since these type of storms can appear suddenly, it is important to plan ahead.  What is the  internal room that you can easily get them into?  It needs to be a room big enough for both you and they to comfortably stay in for a couple of hours.   Is there anything you need to store there such as cleaning supplies and hygiene products?  Do you have something available for entertainment and to pass the time?  A deck of cards, music, tv or tablet.

Another very important thing is the ability to quickly go back to a normal life.  Make sure you can easily get them back out. Getting the broader, rougher details of a plan while things are calm and quiet, will make it easier and faster to carry through If it’s needed.   Being able to return to normal  easily and quickly is as important as getting to safety in the first place. The simpler the plan, the less stress there is for everyone.
